Practice Games: Fishing for Practice

Practice Games are a great way to making music practice more fun and engaging for a young student. Fishing for practice is a take home game where a student gets to go fishing for what element of their practice comes next. In this game the parent or teacher writes each thing the student needs to do on the back of a note card. The parent attaches a paper clip to the notecard and then the student “fishes” for the notecards with a magnetic fishing pole.

Supplies needed:

Magnetic fishing pole (here are the ones I use)

Paper clips

Notecards

Assembly Instructions:

The parent or the teacher writes the different items that need to be practiced on the note cards. For extra fun the student can draw some fish on the back side of the notecards. Attach a metal paperclip to each of the notecards.

Playing instructions:

Scatter the prepared notecards writing side down. Have the student use the magnetic fishing pole to retrieve one note card. The student then reads the notecard and practices the item on the card. For a string player the student can practice their bow hold by holding the fishing rod like a bow.
